About Cullen Funerals Questions

  • Cullen Funerals is an independent funeral home serving families across South East Queensland. We offer thoughtful, affordable funeral care with a focus on dignity, transparency, and genuine personal attention.

We're not a large corporate provider - we're a small, dedicated team that cares deeply about the families we serve.

  • Our main base is in Redbank Plains, and we primarily serve families in Ipswich, Springfield, Logan, and the surrounding areas. We also service Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Redlands, and beyond across South East Queensland.

Our mortuary and care facility is located in Stapylton. If you're unsure whether we cover your area, get in touch and we'll let you know.

  • Yes. We're available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When someone dies, it doesn't follow a schedule -- and neither do we. You can call us at any time and someone will be there to help.

  • Yes. Cullen Funerals is independently owned and operated. We are not affiliated with any large funeral corporation or national group. That means our decisions are always guided by what's right for the family in front of us.

Arranging a Funeral Questions

  • The first step is to contact us. We'll guide you through everything from that very first phone call.

If the death has occurred at home, you may need to contact a doctor or the Queensland Ambulance Service first, depending on the circumstances. Once you're ready, we'll arrange to transfer your loved one into our care and walk you through each step at your own pace.

  • There's no need to rush. We'll make sure your loved one is cared for while you take the time you need.

Some decisions, like whether to choose cremation or burial, will need to be made reasonably soon -- but we'll guide you through what needs to happen and when, without pressure.

  • Yes. Many families choose to arrange everything by phone or online, particularly for our Direct Cremation option. We also welcome in-person meetings if you'd prefer to sit down with us face to face.

  • We'll need your loved one's full name, date of birth, and some personal background. We'll also ask about your preferences for the service, the type of disposition (cremation or burial), and any cultural, religious, or personal wishes.

We'll walk you through every step.

  • Yes. Planning ahead is one of the most thoughtful things you can do for the people you love. It removes the pressure of decision-making during grief and ensures your wishes are clearly recorded.

Contact us to have a conversation about your options.

  • This is certainly possible, though depending on what stage the arrangements are at, there may be additional fees charged by the other funeral home.

Please contact us directly and we'll talk through your situation honestly.

Cremation Questions

  • Yes. Cremation is the most common choice for families in Australia, and we offer a range of cremation options to suit different needs and budgets - from a simple Direct Cremation through to a full funeral service with cremation.

  • A Direct Cremation is a simple cremation without a funeral service, viewing, or ceremony. Your loved one is collected, cared for, and cremated with dignity, and the ashes are returned to your family. It is the most affordable option and can be arranged entirely online or over the phone.

Direct cremation may sometimes be referred to as NSNA or No Service, No Attendance Cremation.

Our Online Direct Cremation is priced from $1,995 and is carried out at Eco Memorial Park in Stapylton.

  • Our Enhanced Direct Cremation sits between a standard Direct Cremation and a full funeral service. It includes a private 60-minute viewing at our Stapylton facility prior to the cremation, giving family the chance to gather, say goodbye, and mark the moment in a quiet and personal way. It is available for weekday cremations, with weekend and after-hours viewings available at additional cost.

  • Absolutely. Our Funeral Service with Cremation package includes a complete chapel service at a local crematorium, where family and friends can gather, share memories, and say a proper goodbye before the cremation takes place. This package includes an Ashmore Jarrah coffin, a HonourPix Digital Guestbook, and a death certificate.

  • Our Online Direct Cremation is carried out at Eco Memorial Park in Stapylton. Other cremation packages are conducted at local crematoriums across South East Queensland, including Centenary Memorial Gardens, Heritage Park, Mt Gravatt, Hemmant, Pinnaroo, Albany Creek, Allambe, Great Southern, Mt Thompson, and Nudgee.

We'll confirm the most suitable location during the arrangement process.

  • The ashes are returned to your family. You can choose to keep them at home, inter them at a cemetery, scatter them in a meaningful location, or have them placed in a personalised urn, cremation jewellery, or keepsake. We can help you explore your options.

  • Yes, in many locations. Scattering is generally not permitted at crematoriums. Some public spaces, including parks and waterways, may require council or authority approval. Scattering on private property is generally straightforward.

We can talk you through the options based on your wishes.

  • Our Online Direct Cremation is our least expensive option, priced at $1,995 including GST. This is required to be disclosed under Queensland Fair Trading regulations, and full details are available on our Pricing Disclosure page.

Burial Questions

  • Yes. We arrange burials at cemeteries across South East Queensland and offer several burial packages depending on what your family needs.

  • We have three burial packages.

Our Online Unattended Burial starts at $3,200 and is a simple burial without a ceremony or gathering -- your loved one is cared for and buried with dignity, with arrangements made online or over the phone.

Our Graveside Burial Service is $4,500 and includes a graveside service of up to 60 minutes, with family and friends gathered at the place of burial.

Our Dual Service Burial is $8,500 and includes a full chapel service at Centenary Memorial Gardens followed by burial at the same location.

  • Plot fees are not included in most packages, as these are set and charged directly by the cemetery. Interment fees are included in the Dual Service Burial package only when it occurs at Centenary Memorial Gardens.

Our team will provide a clear breakdown of all additional cemetery costs as part of your arrangements so there are no surprises.

  • A graveside service is held entirely at the cemetery, with family and friends gathering at the place of burial. A chapel service is held first at a chapel (either at the cemetery or elsewhere), followed by a committal at the graveside.

Both are meaningful options -- it depends on the size of the gathering, personal preference, and whether the family wants a more formal setting for the service.

  • An Unattended Burial means your loved one is buried without a gathering of mourners present. It is a practical, lower-cost option that still ensures respectful and dignified care throughout.

Some families who have held a separate memorial choose this option.

  • Our Unattended Burial includes a Pineboard Mould coffin. Our Graveside and Dual Service packages include an Ashmore Jarrah coffin. Coffin upgrades are available if you'd like something that better reflects your loved one's personality or your family's wishes.

  • Yes. We offer fully bespoke burial arrangements for families who want to hold a service at a church, community hall, or other meaningful venue before proceeding to the cemetery.

Contact us to discuss what you have in mind.

  • We work with cemeteries across South East Queensland. Centenary Memorial Gardens in Sumner is a primary partner, and we can assist families with arrangements at many other cemeteries across the region depending on location and preference.

Contact us and we'll help identify the most suitable option.

Costs and Payment Questions

  • Costs vary depending on the type of service and the options you choose. Our cremation packages start from $1,995 for a Direct Cremation. Burial packages start from $3,200 for an Unattended Burial, not including cemetery plot and interment fees.

For a full breakdown or a custom quote, please contact us directly.

  • No. Although funerals are highly customisable, we don’t expect you to commit without understanding what costs are involved.

We're committed to clear, honest pricing from the start. Before any arrangements are confirmed, we'll walk you through all costs including any third-party fees such as crematorium charges, cemetery fees, and government certificates.

There may be times where additional costs are inccured, this may be due to coffin size upgrades or running overtime on a service. These are outlined in your first meeting with us.

  • We aim to offer many flexible payment options. This may include bank transfer, BPAY, Card Payment, Cash and soon some limited finance options may be available.

Please contact us and we'll confirm the payment options available to you.

  • We ask for a 50% deposit within 24 hours of confirming your funeral arrangement.

The remaining balance is due 2 business days prior to the first funeral service. Any additional costs incurred on the day are due within 7 days of the service.

For questions and queries relation to payment, please contact us to discuss. Payment for funeral services are not subject to probate or estate finalisation. A tax invoice can be provided to assist with release of funds for the funeral service.

General Funeral Questions

  • A funeral is held while the body or coffin is present and leads to burial or cremation. A memorial is held after the cremation or burial has already taken place -- there is no body present, and it can be held days, weeks, or even months later. A wake is an informal gathering, often with food and shared stories, held after the service as a way for family and friends to come together.

  • Burial involves placing the body in the ground or a crypt, typically at a cemetery. Cremation uses heat to reduce the body to ashes, which can then be kept, scattered, or interred. Both options can include a full funeral service beforehand.

Cremation is now the more common choice in Australia, though burial remains deeply important to many families for cultural, religious, or personal reasons.

  • A funeral director manages the practical and logistical side of a funeral -- collecting and caring for the deceased, obtaining the necessary permits, coordinating the cremation or burial, and guiding the family through the process.

They work alongside the celebrant or clergy who leads the ceremony itself.

  • A funeral celebrant crafts and leads the ceremony. They meet with the family to learn about the person who has died, help shape the order of service, write a personalised tribute, and guide everyone through the ceremony on the day.

A good celebrant makes the service feel genuinely reflective of the person's life.

  • A dual service involves two separate components to the farewell. This could mean a chapel service followed by a graveside committal at the cemetery, or a service held at one venue followed by a separate committal. Dual services give more time for tributes, readings, and family involvement and are common when families want both a formal service and a private moment at the graveside or crematorium.

  • A committal is the final act of the funeral service -- the moment when the coffin or ashes are formally placed into the ground, a crypt, or a cremation chamber.

For cremation services, this often happens at the end of the chapel service.

For burial services, it takes place at the graveside.

  • Embalming is a process that temporarily preserves the body, typically used when a deceased loved one is going home for some time, when the service is delayed, or when the body needs to be transported over a long distance and overseas.

It is not legally required in Queensland. In many cases, other preservation measures or simply timely care are sufficient.

We'll advise based on your circumstances.

  • A viewing is an opportunity for family and friends to spend time with their loved one before the cremation or burial. It can bring comfort, provide a sense of closure, and allow people to say goodbye in a private, personal way. It is entirely optional, and there is no right or wrong choice. Some families find it deeply meaningful, while others prefer not to.

We'll support whatever feels right for you.

  • No. Some families choose a Direct Cremation or an Unattended Burial without any formal service. That is a completely valid and dignified choice. Some families then hold a separate informal gathering when the time feels right. Others find that even a small, quiet service provides important closure.

There is no obligation either way.

  • A standard chapel service runs for approximately 45 to 60 minutes, though this varies depending on the venue, the number of tributes, and what the family wants to include. Extended services of up to 120 minutes can be arranged. Graveside services are typically up to 60 minutes.

We'll discuss timing with you during the planning process.

  • Yes. There is no rule that prevents children from attending, and many families find it a gentle and meaningful way to help children understand loss and be included in saying goodbye. We're happy to discuss ways to make the service comfortable and appropriate for younger attendees.

  • There's no strict rule. Many services in Australia are still observed with dark or muted clothing, though increasingly families request casual or even colourful attire to reflect the personality of the person who has died. If the family has a preference, it's usually mentioned in the funeral notice.

If you're unsure, it's always fine to ask.

  • HonourPix is a digital guestbook service included in some of our packages. It allows family and friends to leave messages, share memories, and contribute photos online, creating a lasting digital record of the tributes shared on the day. It's a thoughtful keepsake that families can return to long after the service.

  • If your loved one has passed away interstate or overseas, we can still assist. Interstate and international repatriation requires additional coordination and documentation, and costs will vary.

Contact us and we'll guide you through the process.

  • In the case of a sudden or traumatic death, the death may be referred to the Queensland State Coroner, who will investigate the cause of death before releasing the body to the family. This process can take varying amounts of time. We have experience working alongside coroner's cases and will guide you through what to expect and how to plan during this time.

  • A coroner's case is when the Queensland State Coroner takes responsibility for investigating a death. This generally applies to sudden, unexpected, or unexplained deaths, or deaths in certain circumstances such as accidents, apparent suicides, or deaths in custody. The coroner must release the body before funeral arrangements can proceed.

We'll support you through the process and keep you informed.

  • Yes, and we actively encourage it. A meaningful funeral reflects the life of the person who has died -- their personality, their passions, their relationships. This might mean a particular piece of music, a reading from a favourite book, a display of photos, a cultural ritual, or something entirely unique to your family.

We'll work with you to shape something that feels genuine.

  • A natural or green burial focuses on minimal environmental impact. It typically involves a biodegradable coffin or shroud, no embalming, and burial in a natural setting. Interest in natural burial is growing in Australia.

If this is something your family is interested in, please contact us to discuss what may be available in our region.
